Take a look to see what it’s like to paint outside the studio.Walnut Street Cafe offers a variety of food and drinks along with an eccentric outdoor seating space with a fire pit and perfect view of the sky! Michelle Lewis conducts the class, introducing you to techniques in acrylic painting, along with tips to get started, guiding you through, but allowing plenty of room to be unique. These classes are for the one’s who think they can’t be creative. After participating you find that the ability was always there, it just needed some uprooting. Please join us for a fun night out of the studio!

If anyone out there has caught wind of this upcoming trend of painting in a bar/restaurant well, I’m certain you soon will. The paint and sip parties have invaded restaurants around Boston and beyond. I have had the pleasure of attending a few of these events through PaintNite, Matisse and Merlot, and North Shore Paint Party, of which my friend started who gave me the opportunity to teach a few classes! Chronicle even did a piece on The Artist’s Bar which brought much deserved attention to this popular trend hitting the north shore. It’s truly a fun experience, an experience worth participating in! Shelscapes has recently been invited to teach a paint class at The Walnut Street Cafe, with a similar idea in mind, exploring the artistic process through the art of painting. The company PaintNite held an artist competition at Ned Devines in Boston, where portions of the proceeds were donated to Brain Tumor Research, the event even caught the attention of Harvard Business Graduate students who have created an online platform serving as a means for student artists to sell their work at a price they set! Many of the paint and sip companies have donated to One Fund Boston as well. Not only are they working to benefit those in need, but they bring people together in a new and interesting way. As an artist it’s rewarding to watch others create something they never thought they could do. I like the idea because it makes an element of art approachable and less intimidating. Yes, anyone can paint. My three year old paints daily, on my windows, my fridge, even his wall. Is it good? Well, art is subjective. So what will separate the artist from the customer, the child’s work from the Pollocks or the Rothkos? What makes art art? You will have to be the judge. As for the artist who stands before the crowd, with paintbrush in hand, sharing their work with the world, thank you.
